Intravenous Therapy: IV - Ozone

Ozone is naturally present in the earth’s atmosphere and is created when ultraviolet energy causes oxygen atoms to temporarily recombine in groups of three or by the action of electrical discharges on oxygen. So it is often created by thunder and lightning. Because it is made up of three oxygen (O2) atoms, Ozone is known chemically as O3. At room temperature O3 is a colorless gas with a characteristic odour. Its name originates from the Greek word ‘ozein’ meaning “to smell” and it was due to the odour of the chemical that led to its discovery in 1840 by the German Chemist Christian Friedrich Schӧnbein. Taking advantage of Ozone’s bactericidal activity; it was used during World War I to treat German soldiers affected by gaseous gangrene due to anaerobic infections. In the 1930’s Dr. Payr, a surgeon, being treated for a gangrenous pulpite, was surprised at the efficacy of ozone and expanded its application to general surgery. He was the first to propose the use of insufflations of O2 –O3 into the rectum to treat chronic colitis and fistulae. By the 1950’s Dr. Wolff realized that blood should be exposed to O2-O3 ex vivo (outside the organism) in a dispensable, ozone-resistant glass bottle to a mixture of O2-O3 with an exact ozone concentration. Wolff developed the real ozonized autohemotherapy (O3-AHT), which, with some modifications, is used today.

Ozone is oxygen in its most active state and is an extremely potent oxidant that has been shown to posses broad spectrum antimicrobial activity. It has the ability to completely destroy bacteria, viruses, spores, fungus, mold, mildew, cysts and many other contaminants. Ozone also has indirect actions on our immune systems. It stimulates Th1 cytokines while at the same time down regulates Th2 cytokines. Th2 cytokines are white blood cell messengers that cause an inflammatory response in our body such as that seen in allergies and autoimmune conditions. Th1 cytokines are white blood cell messengers that decrease the inflammatory response and help eliminate intra-cellular infections.

Ozone therapy is a means to deliver oxygen to the body’s cells and has been proven to treat a variety of illnesses such as HIV, cancer cells, autoimmune disease, arthritis and pain, infection, colds and flu. This is important because, unlike healthy cells that love oxygen, disease causing viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi are almost all anaerobic, meaning that they use sugar to survive instead of oxygen and cannot survive in an oxygenated environment

In 1923 Dr. Otto Warburg, a German biochemist discovered one of the primary causes of cancer. He determined that when the level of oxygen available to a cell decreases by 40%, the cell begins to ferment sugar anaerobically to try to keep itself alive. This causes the regulatory mechanisms on cell replication to shut down, and as a result, the cell begins to make random of copies of itself. The growth of cancer cells is supported by fermentation which can be initiated only in the relative absence of oxygen. Oxygen needs to be delivered to all our cells to prevent the initiation of the fermentation process.
Ozone has been shown to selectively inhibit the growth of cancer cells without inhibition of normal cells because cancer cells are less able to compensate for the oxidative burden of ozone than the normal cells.

• Balances cytokines by activating beneficial white blood cells that regulate the immune system. This means that the application of medial ozone is extremely useful for immune activation in patients with a low immune status and/or immune deficit. As a response to this activation through ozone, the body’s immune cells produce special messengers called cytokines (including important mediators such as interferon’s and interleukins). These inform other immune cells, setting off a cascade of positive changes throughout the immune system.
• Ozone is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal because it is highly oxidative and activates the immune system.
• Activates the three enzyme detoxification systems in the body and increases the body’s ability to reduce free radicals by increasing the efficiency of glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase.
• Increases the delivery of oxygen to your tissues and cells, and stimulates circulation.
• Increases energy (metabolism) by burning fuel more efficiently.
• Ozone is anti-neoplastic (inhibit and combat the development of tumors)
• Used in Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and allergies by oxidizing petrochemicals.
• Increase vascular distensibility, important in heart disease prevention.

Note: In any form the ozone therapy, the breathing in of ozone gas is Dangerous.

1. Major Autohemotherapy (MAHT): In this method approximately 50ml to 250ml of blood is taken from the body by standard phlebotomy, into an IV bag. It is then mixed with a calculated dose of ozone gas, outside the body. Once mixed it is introduced back into the body via standard IV. MAHT is used in age-related conditions, anti-ageing, circulatory disorders, virus, bacterial, fungal disease, and for general immunoactivation.

2. Minor Autohemotherapy (MiAHT): This method is used in the treatment of allergies such as food, inhalants (hay fever, sinusitis) and environmental allergies. In this treatment a small amount of blood is taken into a syringe and mixed with ozone. The ozone denatures the antigen (allergen) in the blood. The blood is then reintroduced into the patient as an injection into muscle tissue. This produces a desensitizing effect on the immune system by immunoactivation.

3. External treatment: A closed system using O3 gas fed into special plastic bags fitting various parts of the body. This method is highly effective in treating ulcers, sores, open wounds, postoperative lesions, shingles (herpes) and infected areas etc. Other forms are ozonized pure water and ozonized pure medical olive oil (for skin eruptions such as eczemas and conditions involving molds, funguses and lichens etc).

4. Rectal Insufflation: O3 gas application via the rectal route is not as inconvenient or unpleasant as it sounds. In fact, the patient feels very little discomfort, as the O3 gas is directly absorbed by the sensitive intestinal membranes. In addition, the special designed disposable tube is lubricated, which makes the method totally hygienic and practical. This method is primarily indicated for the inflammatory conditions of the intestinal tract, but is finding increasing use for general revitalization.

5. Intra-Articular Injection: This treatment involves the stimulation of chondrocytes via an injection of ozone into the joints for the treatment of inflamed and painful joints (arthritis, arthrosis, sciatica). O3 also decreases pain.
